Haryana government announces state sports fund


Chandigarh, Nov 21 (IANS) In order to promote sports and sportspersons in the state, the Haryana government Saturday announced the setting up of a state sports fund.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said his government is committed to promote sporting culture in the state and also plans to open a sports academy and a sports university in the state.

Hooda said the cash awards to medal winners at National Games had been enhanced to Rs.3 lakh (gold), Rs.2 lakh (silver) and Rs.1 lakh (bronze) from Rs.51,000, Rs.31,000 and Rs.11,000 earlier.

Hooda was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 23rd Haryana State Games organised at the campus of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in Rohtak.

The four-day games are being organised by the Haryana Olympic Association. Nearly 6,000 players from all over Haryana are participating in 28 sporting events.
